What is Pulmonology?

Pulmonology is a medical department that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of lung and respiratory system disorders. The treatment of the diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, allergic diseases, respiratory disorders during sleep, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (ie COPD), tuberculosis, and diseases caused by smoking addiction is diagnosed and treated in this medical department. Major Diseases and Treatments of Pulmonology Department

Lung Cancer: It is seen as a result of the rapid and uncontrolled proliferation of lung cells. The patient may have some symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pains, and hemoptysis. Various methods are used for the treatment such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation therapy.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): This disease is seen as a result of chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is a chronic disease that causes to have breathing difficulties and it generally reduces the patient's life quality. Disease effects will increasingly continue in cases when the correct diagnosis and treatments are not performed.

Chronic Cough: Coughs that last longer than three weeks. It can reduce life quality and cause weakness by seriously affecting the sleep quality of the person. The cause of chronic cough, which is mostly a symptom of a more serious illness, should be determined by appropriate diagnostic methods and it is necessary to start immediate treatment.

Asthma and Allergic Lung Diseases: Allergic reactions and asthma are directly related to each other. As a result of the perception of allergens entering the body by the immune system, some symptoms can occur such as narrowing of the respiratory tract, increased mucus production, wheezing and coughing.

Pneumonia (Pneumonia): It is an infectious disease that occurs in the lungs and occurs due to fungi, bacteria or viruses. The infection settles in air-filled sacs called alveoli and leads to difficulty in breathing. Pneumonia, which has the symptoms such as cough, fever, excessive sweating, chills, chest pain and shortness of breath, should be treated as soon as possible.

Atelectasis (Pneumothorax): It is a disease that occurs with symptoms such as chest pain, cough and shortness of breath and requires immediate treatment. Atelectasis may occur as a result of any other diseases or medical intervention.

Pulmonary Embolism: It is a disease with symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, excessive sweating, shortness of breath and hemoptysis. It is the blood clots in the lung that occurs when a clot in different part of the body moves through the bloodstream and blocks other vessels especially the artery.

Pleurisy: It is called pleurisy when the space between the pleura has filled the excessive fluid due to different reasons. Pleurisy can be a symptom of many different diseases rather than a disease in itself. Lung cancer, pleural cancer, lung abscess, pneumonia and tuberculosis are some diseases that cause pleurisy.

Sarcoidosis: This systemic disease is caused by abnormal activity in the immune system and affects the heart, spleen, liver, eye, brain, lymph nodes and especially the lung. The causes of the disease cannot be understood. It is a non-communicable disease. Diagnostic methods such as chest x-ray and tomography, blood and urine analysis are used for the diagnosis.

Sleep Apnea: It is called sleep apnea when breathing stops during sleep due to different reasons. As a result of sleep apnea, some symptoms such as daytime sleepiness and snoring can be seen. The patient is observed in the sleep laboratory for a night so that the correct diagnosis can be made. During this observation, the stages of sleep, respiratory effort, airflow, oxygen saturation, electrocardiography, electroencephalography, electromyography are recorded. By examining these records, the frequency, duration and effects of apnea are evaluated and the appropriate treatment methods are followed accordingly.
