Nephrology

Nephrology is a branch of internal diseases which deals with kidney diseases stated as below

  • Acute renal failure
  • Chronic renal failure
  • Hypertension
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Kidney stones
  • Kidney cancer
  • Uremia
  • Fluid and mineral imbalances
  • Dialysis
  • Kidney transplant
  • Follow-up and treatment of these diseases

Renal failure is a malfunction of the kidney which cannot function for a long time without dialysis or kidney transplant. It is also known as an end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It is the last stage of chronic kidney disease. Renal failure occurs when the kidneys lose their ability to adequately filter toxins from the blood. If the kidneys don't function properly, the body becomes overloaded with toxins. If it is not be treated, this can lead to renal failure that will be a life threat.

Individuals with renal failure usually have few symptoms of this disease. However, in some cases, there are no symptoms at all. The possible symptoms include:

  • Decreased amount of urine,
  • Distention in the legs, ankles and feet caused by the excess water in the body not being excreted by the kidneys,
  • Unexplained shortness of breath,
  • Extreme drowsiness or tiredness,
  • Persistent nausea,
  • Confusion,
  • Pain or pressure in the chest,
  • Convulsion or coma.

Various methods are used in renal failure treatment. The type of treatment depends on the cause of the renal failure.

One of the treatments which can be used for renal failure is dialysis. Dialysis takes over the kidney's function, by using a machine to filter the blood and purify the toxic elements.

Another treatment option is a kidney transplant. A transplanted kidney functions normally and eliminates the need for dialysis.

However, the waiting period for a compatible kidney donation is usually long. The process can progress faster if there is a living donor. After surgery, an immunosuppressant is used to prevent the body from rejecting the new kidney. These drugs can have severe effects and serious side effects.

You can find the details of the mentioned treatments below

Dialysis

For people with renal failure problems, blood and urine cleaning becomes impossible in the body and exterior support is required for the cleaning. This treatment is provided by a machine and this process is called dialysis.

Kidney Transplant

Kidney transplantation is performed in patients with end-stage kidney failure. In this process, there is a preparation period, an operation period and a postoperative period.

In the pre-transplant preparation period, it is checked whether the values of the donor are compatible with the values of the patient who will receive the transplant, whether the donor has diabetes or hypertension, and tissue compatibility is evaluated. An immunological comparison test is performed between two patients.

The transplant can be done from a living body or cadaver; After the transplant is done, it depends on the stay at the hospital on the donor type. If it is received from a living donor the staying will take about 5/6 days and if it is from a cadaver then it can take to 8/9 days.

After the transplant, the necessary drugs will be prescribed to the patient and will be informed about the usage of the drugs . The patient should take the drugs as specified. The next process is the follow-up. In this follow-up there will be detailed blood and urine tests performed. If there will be a problem encountered, then will the Nephrology doctors start immediately the necessary treatment.

A rejection crisis may occur in a certain period after the transplant. It can be saved in case that it is detected early. The kidney can be rejected from the body even years after the transplant. In this case, the patient's kidney may lose all its functions after a while. Dialysis may be required.
