Rheumatic diseases with a very large scope which is related to local and systematic diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Pediatric Rheumatology deals with the muscles, joints and connective tissues diseases in children.Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is known as childhood rheumatism, familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) and systemic lupus erythematosus diseases are the most common diseases in our country. Other diseases can affect the joints, bones, blood and connective tissues in children. The pediatric rheumatology department also takes part in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.

Diagnosis and Treatment Service of Pediatric Rheumatology Department;

Many diseases can affect children's blood, joints, and connective tissues, as well as all other organs. Pediatric rheumatologists treat the following diseases;

  • Growing pains
  • juvenile idiopathic arthritis
  • systemic lupus erythematosus
  • juvenile dermatomyositis
  • Unknown fevers
  • Recurrent fevers
  • Familial Mediterranean fever
  • Scleroderma
  • Spondyloarthritis
  • Behcet's disease
  • Henoch-Schonlein purpura
  • Kawasaki disease
  • Polyarteritis nodosa and microscopic polyangiitis
  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Wegener's granulomatosis
  • Benign hypermobile joint disease

In the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases, a multidisciplinary approach should be adopted and cooperated with other fields such as FTR, radiology, neurology, ophthalmology and orthopedics.

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF): Familial Mediterranean fever is an inherited disease and stomach and chest pain, high fever attacks are the most common symptoms. These attacks begin before the age of 20 in about 90% of patients. The disease is usually seen in third and fourth-degree relatives. If the patient is not treated, there will be an accumulation of a substance called amyloid, which will lead to kidney failure over the years without being aware of it.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA): It is a chronic disease and has permanent signs of joint inflammation. The most significant symptom of this joint inflammation is pain, swelling and limitation of movement. But every joint swelling, pain and limitation of movement in children should not be confused with JIA. This symptom may indicate a large number of different diseases.

Although the exact causes of JIA and similar diseases have not been explained yet, the general reason is self-harm of the child's immune system. If it is not treated correctly, it can lead to joint disorders and loss of functions as a result of joint inflammation.

Childhood dermatomyositis (juvenile dermatomyositis): An immune system disease that damages its own tissues is called childhood dermatomyositis. In this disorder, sometimes the muscle tissue, sometimes the skin tissue, and sometimes both muscle and skin tissue are inflamed together. It is seen weakness in the muscles especially around the hips and shoulders, skin eruption on the knees and elbows, on the face, eyelids, and on the hands and fingers joint. Fatigue, which severely limits movement, is the most significant symptom of muscle weakness caused by inflammation.

Scleroderma: Scleroderma literally means "hard". An undesirable fibrous tissue increase in the skin structure for an unknown reason. This situation causes skin hardening and tightness. The limitation of movement and tissue loss developed due to this tension. Skin hardening may develop in different regions and different ways. If this tissue change in the skin spreads to all other organs, some dysfunctions can occur in the patient.

Pain syndromes (Fibromyalgia): Fibromyalgia is chronic soft tissue rheumatism that causes pain in the muscles and bones, disrupts sleep and leads to cognitive disorders. The disease is rarely seen in children, mostly in adolescence. Patients have complaints of widespread pain in the tissues. The severity of the pain is variable. The pain is observed in the upper and lower parts of the body, such as the upper shoulders, hips, knees, elbows, back of the head, neck and upper chest.
