Cardiovascular Surgery is a medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Medical or surgical treatment of cardiovascular system diseases will be performed in this department.

Cardiovascular Surgery Diseases and Treatment Methods

  • Coronary by-pass surgery
  • Cardiac valve surgeries (replacement or repair of valves)
  • minimally invasive heart surgery
  • Aortic aneurysm surgeries (Classic and Endovascular (Closed) method)
  • Heart tumors
  • Surgical and Endovascular (stent, balloon) treatment of peripheral arterial diseases
  • Treatment of acute and chronic arterial diseases (Embolectomy, thrombectomy)
  • Carotid Artery (Carotid artery) Diseases and treatment
  • Varicose veins treatment (Endovenous Laser and Radiofrequency Ablation, Sclerotherapy / Foam Sclerotherapy)
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis Treatment
  • Cardiac membrane (Pericardium) diseases
  • Vasospastic vascular diseases
  • Buerger's disease
  • Some inflammatory vascular diseases
  • Treatment of cardiovascular injuries

The most common diseases and treatments are stated as below

Heart Tumors

Heart tumors are usually formed by the tumors in other organs by spreading to the heart. These tumors occur more frequently than cardiac tumors. The tumor spreads to the heart mostly through lung tumors. Cancers such as leukemia, esophagus, and lymphoma can also spread to the heart. These tumors first colonize the inner valve of the heart , then they can spread to the heart muscle.

Symptoms

1. Bloodway Occlusion: Blockages in blood flow can occur if the heart tumor is raised toward heart chambers or valves. Symptoms may vary depending on the region of spread:

If the tumor is in one of the heart chambers, fatigue and shortness of breath can be observed along with the movement.

If the tumor is located in the cardiac cavity, symptoms such as pain in the chest, shortness of breath, fatigue, fainting may occur.

2. Cardiac Dysfunction: Cardiac tumors which spread to the muscle tissues in the heart may show indications similar to cardiac insufficiency. These symptoms are swelling of the legs, weight loss, difficulty in breathing, chest pain, fatigue

3. Malfunctions in Conduction System: Tumors spreading around the heart conduction system may block the heart block and cause irregularities and changes in heart rate. This is sometimes unnoticed, sometimes the heart feels slow, sometimes the heart beats fast. Fatigue and fainting can be observed in case that it beats slowly. When it beats fast, cardiac arrest may occur.

4. Systemic Symptoms: Primary heart tumors occur with symptoms similar to the infection symptoms. These symptoms include high fever, exhaustion, night sweats, sudden weight loss, tremor and joint weight.

In cases of primary cardiac tumors; If possible, surgery is preferred first. Cancer cells are removed from the body. This method is the most effective treatment method.

Burger Disease

Buerger is a peripheral arterial disease medically known as Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) which threatens young men who smoke. It is commonly known as Pruning's disease among the people. Buerger's disease causes blockage and damages to the artery structure. When the limbs such as hands and feet, cannot feed enough because of the blockage, this situation eventually will cause further injuries that may lead to gangrene and decay. In some cases amputation of hands and feet may be required.

Although the disease is statistically more common in men, it is occasionally seen in women. However, the crucial point about this disease is that it is caused by tobacco and cigarette consumption. Early diagnosis and treatment are of great importance as Buerger's disease can lead to limb loss if it is progress. Stay away from all types of tobacco consumed is the only way to stop Buerger's disease.

Symptoms

  • Pain during walking is significant. ( The pain, which is relieved by rest in the first stage, becomes severe during short distance walking and even during rest as the disease progresses )
  • Tingling and numbness in the hands, feet and fingers.
  • Pale hands and feet , cold hands and feet are the typical symptoms.( Raynaud's phenomenon )
  • In earlier stage, painful and open wounds occur in the limbs
  • Inflammation and clots cause gangrene and cause limb loss

Treatment: The first step of Buerger's Disease treatment is to stay away from cigarettes and all tobacco products and not be in smoking areas. As the disease progresses, even if the patient stops smoking, it still continues to affect his/her body. Some treatments are therefore used to open the clogged vessel and increase decreased blood flow. The first step in the treatment is the use of vasodilators and certain drugs which make the blood liquid.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is efficient as it increases local blood flow and allows oxygen in the blood to reach the tissues. Amputation can be prevented by bypass surgery in Buerger patients for whom drug therapy may not be the definitive solution. Today, studies on stem cell therapy have also gained speed.
